Sustainable Practice

We believe in promoting sustainable practices to support children's developing attitudes and values of the natural environment. The interdependence between people, plants, animals, and Country (Wiradjuri for us here in Gundagai).

How do we do this?

We care for Country. We foster the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives and implement our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).

1. We have bins for

        -General Rubbish

-Recyclable materials such as paper and card that we are not able to use for craft

        - Green waste

-Pig and chicken scrapes (Staff and children take these home to feed animals such as farm pigs and chickens)

-Worm scraps collection bin for our worm farm

2. We have a compost area within our playground. The children are involved in collecting materials to add to the compost.
3. We have a worm farm. The castings are used as fertiliser for gardens.
4. We have a vegetable patch where we grow our own vegetables and fruits and use our compost and worm castings as natural fertilisation.
5. The children are encouraged to collect materials from home and add to our craft box for construction and craft ideas.

We love to recycle and reuse/repurpose -

  • cardboard rolls

  • lids

  • containers cotton reels/ corks

  • old clothes and shoes for ‘dress ups’

  • icy pole sticks

  • plastic bottles

  •  ice-cream containers takeaway containers

  • string/ribbon lace/wool

  • greeting cards wrapping paper

  • aluminium foil

  •  bottle tops

  • small boxes / large boxes

  •  scrap materials/ scarves/ telephones/ baby bath/ pots and pans/ plastic cutlery, plates and cups.

  • buttons soft wood scraps (for carpentry work)

Anything you can think of that would encourage a child to use imagination, creativity and investigation!

6. We incorporate sustainable practice within the program;

  • discuss and investigating ways to become more energy and water wise,

  • how human activity can impact on the environment, and

  • learning about nature and the world

  • we use natural products to the everyday practice such as rocks, logs, plants, seed pods etc

  • We allow children to  interact with mud, sand, water and fire (under supervision in a controlled environment)

  • We shop at opportunity shops and try to source second hand items. We re-purpose unused items and ask the community to fix resources.

We welcome your participation!

Please feel free to offer plants/ideas/and help with our preschool continuing to improve sustainable practice.
